Bill Belew has raised 2 bi-cultural kids, now 34 and 30. And he and his wife are now parenting a 3rd, Mia, who is 8.

“I pledge (dont’ know what that means) allegiance (don’t know this word either) to the flag of the United States of America.

And to the republic (drawing another blank on this word) for which is stands.

One nation.

Under God.

Indivisible ( In divvy bull what?) with liberty (maybe) and justice (nope) for all.”

I can say the pledge of allegiance blindfolded. Well, I can say anything blindfolded. Having my eyes closed doesn’t block my mouth.

Pledge of Allegiance

Pledge of Allegiance

Every morning at kindergarten we say this pledge. I think we are learning to love and be loyal to America. I am not sure why yet. Maybe I’ll learn that later.

I love China, too. Mommy is made in China. And I have a lot of Chinese parts.

What do you think, should children be taught to love their country when they are little? Or should we be able to make that decision for ourselves after we grow up?

After we learn what the ‘lesser of two evils’ means in pot licking (Ed. politicking)?

After we learn that sometimes our country is on the wrong side of world opinion? And even makes a mistake or two?

Daddy loves America. Mommy loves China.

I love both because I am Chinese-American.

Is there a reason why I shouldn’t?

Read about how my mommy became a US citizen. That makes her Chinese-American, too!

Talk to Bill and others about their experiences raising bi-cultural Japanese-American kids.
