Bilingual is Good

Learning another language is not easy. Especially if I don’t need it. Or know why I need it.

I read a brief story about a mommy who was trying to get her little girl to study Chinese.

Her little girl is 11-years old. That’s pretty big.

Her mommy told her that if she studied hard to learn Chinese she would have a better chance of getting a job?

Wow, this mommy is making her little girl go to work early!!

Her little girl wants to be a fashion designer.

Her mommy told her that it is as hard to be a fashion designer as it is to be a writer.

Um … not getting the connection here. Maybe somebody who is 11-years old can get it. But not me.

To be set apart in difficult job choices (we’re back to the job hunt) being bilingual helps.

Then her mommy told her 11-year girl about another mommy who told her kids that learning another language is ‘crucial in today’s marketplace.’

Is getting a job the only reason to learn another language?

I think not.

I have written about a lot of very good reasons.

My question for the above mommy – can you speak another language?

Show your little girl how it is done and I’ll be she’ll want to be like you.
