Bill Belew has raised 2 bi-cultural kids, now 34 and 30. And he and his wife are now parenting a 3rd, Mia, who is 8.

I make spelling mistakes sometimes. I am only 5-years old. I think I should get a break now and then.

My editor is a very good speller … usually … unless he is not paying attention or gets lazy or doesn’t even check. (Ed. Mia?!)

And I am learning phonetics and such at kindergarten like my daddy did 100 years ago when he was in kindergarten. (Ed. Mia!?)

It seems that people who learn phonetics become better readers and spellers over time.

But what about professionals? I mean people who get paid to catch spelling mistakes and typos … but don’t?

Daddy was reading about Gwyneth Paltrow and parenting or some such article. It’s kind of cool if you think about it. Not Gwyneth Paltrow. But that every day daddy gets an email to tell him who is saying what about things daddy and I are interested in, like Chinese-Americans, growing up, parenting, being bilingual and such. Today it was the girl from Ironman 3. Of course it will be hard to raise kids if you have to save the world at the same time. Anyway …

Eonline is a big deal. It’s a huge site and millions of people go there daily, says dad. You would think that they’d pay special attention, have someone dedicated to not letting mistakes get through.

Or maybe their proofreader needs to go back to kindergarten and learn phonetics.

Oh … in case you are wondering. I don’t go looking for mistakes. It was just there.

Are you a good speller?

Talk to Bill and others about their experiences raising bi-cultural Japanese-American kids.
