Chinese, especially Shanghaiese, know world-class fashion. It doesn’t mean, however, that they can afford it.

In America, the prudent shopper will head not to the mall, but to the factory outlet.

Shanghai Brilliance Group and Hong Kong-based Wharf have latched on to the idea of a factory outlet in Shanghai.

shanghai-outlet.jpgThe two companies invested a total of $58.7 million in building Shang Outlets Direct Sale Plaza Co. in the western part of Shanghai.

Shoppers spend one million yuan ($125,000) daily and 3 million on weekends to hunt for bargains among piles of fake Gucci bags and Nike backpacks.

A discount home improvement store is scheduled to open this month. It’s kind of like having a Home Depot on one end of the parking lot at your favorite outlet complex.

Brilliance Group is no fool…they have signed partnerships with 11 tourist agencies to bring people there to shop.

Other developers seem to be following suit.

The Chinese love to shop…and the love bargains. Some will even drive across town to cash in a coupon to save $2 that they more than used up in gas.

No telling them otherwise…the outlet malls are bound to be a big hit in China, too.

What do you think?
