Parents Time Out

Parents Time Out

The best people to ask for advice on raising kids are not parents who are raising their kids. It’s parents who have raised their kids. Who see how things turned out.

It’s not parents who are having good day or even a good spell. Or parents who are having a bad day and, yeah, a bad spell who should be giving advice on what works. It’s parents who can see their kids as adults that we should be listening to.

Parents with raised kids have a different perspective.

Here’s one bit of parenting insight:

If you have never been hated by your child you have never been a parent.
-Bette Davis

Hate may be too strong a word. But the idea is clear. Kids don’t always like what it is their parents are asking them to do or telling them to not do. Sometimes they intensely dislike what their parents are wanting.

I haven’t ever hated my mommy or daddy. And my daddy says that my older brothers have never hated him … except for maybe now a little bit.

Mommies and daddies are supposed to know best.

And we kids are supposed to be able to trust them to teach us right from wrong.

I think the only time that a kid might hate their parent for an understandable reason is when that trust is broken.

Or maybe when they need a time out.
