Bill Belew has raised 2 bi-cultural kids, now 34 and 30. And he and his wife are now parenting a 3rd, Mia, who is 8.

Mulan and Mia
Everyone around Mia and her new friend was speaking a different language! And it sounded like Chinese.
Best of all, Mia could understand! The little girl who waved at Mia from inside the mirror invited Mia to her house to have some noodles and seaweed and pot stickers and other delicious foods. Her country, said her new friend had so many many kinds of food.
Mia and her new friend talked about her country and Mia learned how different it was from where she lived. Mia told her new friend that she visited Disneyland in China one time. But her new friend had no idea what she was talking about.
“Is that like climbing a pole, or swimming in a river?!”
Mia laughed and laughed.
Her new friend told Mia that she dreamed of being her own person and living her own life, not the life that someone else had prepared for her.
As Mia and the little Chinese girl walked Mia could see in the distance another little girl who did not have black hair. It was yellow. And her voice was pure and clean. Mia turned to tell her new friend who she saw but her Chinese friend was gone.
