Sharing lessons about education and technology

Michael Yu’s new Oriental Education and Technology Group is the realization of the “Chinese Dream.”

Yu Minhong’s father built a pig pen with rubble – broken pieces of brick, stones, whatever he could gather.

The lesson impacted Yu who has built an English learning empire – the New Oriental Education and Technology Group.

The group has a network of 25 schools and 111 learning centers in 24 cities. It also has an on-line network with some 2 million students.

Yu is worth about $250 million since becoming the first private education company to be listed on the NYSE in September.

And Yu did it in 13 years.

Yu had a dream of going to the US to study English. When he couldn’t get a visa to go, he devoted his life to helping others get their visas….hundreds of thousands of them.

And then he went to the US, as a businessman.

Yu says about the NYSE listing, “It’s not a miracle, but a natural result of our efforts. It’s just a milestone along the way.”

It reminds me a Chinese proverb – yu gong yu shan.  An old man sets out to move a mountain one shovel full at a time. With diligence, he achieves the task.

The American Dream, er, the Chinese Dream like all dreams if achieved, will be done so by consistent hard work over an extended period of time.

Yu sets the example for Chinese and Americans alike.

What do you think?

That’s an inspiring story of rags to riches.
Inch by inch it’s a cinch.
How wonderful to see such determination and persistence payoff.
