Blogging in Japan

I don’t know beans about fashion. Please don’t tell my wife – she worked as a fashion designer in China for nearly 10 years. Please don’t tell my boss, either. I teach at a fashion and graphic design school.

I teach the general education classes – and, okay, I do know something about fashion – more than I want to admit.

This guy, Nicolas Ghesquiere, showed up in Time’s Top 100 list. Time must want the English readers from some other country to buy their rag….yep, it’s France.

It seems Nicole Kidman and the Olsen twins wear his designs. The Olsen twins each take a leg in a pair of medium sized trousers.

What interested me is how this guy got to be famous in the first place.

He designed a line of uniforms for a Japanese partner. That’ll do it. The Japanese love fashion, the newest, the hottest, the trendiest and the most expensive. They, the Japanese, have nothing else to spend their money on, so it may as well be fashion.

The young ladies of Japan, the OL’s (Office Ladies) they are called are the richest of the lot. They make $30-40K a year and live at home. They don’t pay rent or buy food and they can’t possibly spend that much at the coffee shops or the movies. So, where else will the money go – fashion.

Yo! Nick, tell the Japanese ‘thank you!’ for getting you on the list.
