Bill Belew has raised 2 bi-cultural kids, now 34 and 30. And he and his wife are now parenting a 3rd, Mia, who is 8.

My daddy can probably remember when Michael Chang beat Ivan Lendl in 1989. (Ed. I almost remember)

This is a cool story.

Ivan Lendl was ranked number one in the world and was totally expected to win. Ivan Lendl was 29 years old and Michael Chang was just 17. It wasn’t even the final match.

Lendl started off beating Michael pretty badly. But Michael fought back. Fighters are cool.

But Michael got super cramps and could hardly walk much less play more tennis and almost talked himself into quitting.

Instead he stayed with it. People who don’t quit are cool, too.

Michael through the profession off of his game by mixing things up, including this underhanded serve.

People who are not afraid to do things differently are cool.

Michael won the match after beating Ivan Lendl.

He then went on to win the whole tournament.

It’s not the winning that causes me to admire Michael Chang.

It’s the fighting spirit. It’s the non-quitting spirit. It’s the I am not afraid to do something so silly that everyone might laugh spirit.

Michael Chang is an inspiration to me.

I hope that when I grow up I will remember that I can be like him, too.
