Shreesanth the Indian pace spearhead has come back strongly in test cricket.

He is often called the angry young man of Indian cricket. Some say that he carries his heart on his sleeve. Others dislike him for being brash and crude in a game that was often referred as a gentleman’s game. Yet, at full throttle, S Sreesanth is a bowler that India could do well to have in their line-up, given that he not only possesses the speed to test the batsmen on pitches which are even slightly helpful, but also has the outswing – to the right-handed batsman – to get the better of them.

But Sreesanth’s problem has been rather simple. There have been occasions when in an attempt to get the better of opposition, he has got abusive, and almost looked like taking it too far. So much so, that a couple of years into his career, he had not only found himself out of the side, but also was embroiled in many controversies. It started with the ‘Slapgate’ with Harbhajan Singh in 2008, and was followed by him being warned by his state cricket association – Kerala – to mend his ways or be left out of the state side too. He missed out on a game because he had a marriage to attend! Some audacity that is!

He then followed it up with another set of antics on the field in a match in the domestic tournament, Irani Trophy against Mumbai, which prompted the BCCI to send a final warning to the bowler. The message was simple, ‘behave or be left out’.

Apparently, this latest missive seems to have worked as Sreesanth has vowed to control his aggression, and instill more discipline in himself. and despite not having played too much first-class cricket this season, it just needed this promise and full fitness for the selectors to pick him in the 15-member squad for the Sri Lanka series. He did not play in the first game, but an out-of-form Ishant Sharma made way for Sreesanth and it was on the third day that he displayed the new-and-improved self in a non-stop spell of bowling that lasted more than 90 minutes. In the process, at the time of writing, he had picked all the three Sri Lankan wickets that had fallen in the day.

Wonder why the BCCI did not send that warning letter earlier!

He remained unbeaten at the end, as India declared their innings at 705/7 – their highest ever in Australia. Laxman scored 178. It was only towards the end of his innings that he began to play some strokes through the off-side as well.

Not that he was done. In the second innings, he continued his good form by hitting another unbeaten half century, which helped India set up a target of 443 for an Aussie win on the last day.

The match ended in a draw, but what was interesting to note is that Tendulkar continued with his form – scoring another unbeaten 194 in the next game he played against Pakistan, making it a stretch of 495 runs without getting out!
