Googe Panda Update

Googe doing business in China

Google has found a new way to do business in China.

Google is in talks with China Mobile in Hong Kong to team up with them to offer Internet search services in China via mobile phone months.

In the near future, the Chinese will be able to search on their cell phones.

My question is, and I know I am setting myself up, why would you want to do a Google search on your cell phone?

China Mobile is looking for ways to expand its revenue sources.

Someone is likely to tell me sometimes how stupid this question is, but what are you going to search for on a cell phone and more importantly, will you be able to see the results?

I can’t even see what time it is on my phone even when the digits are in supersized mode. I can’t imagine trying to read Google search results on a mobile phone screen, especially if I must go through those stupid sponsored results first.

What do you think?

Talk to Bill and others about their experiences raising bi-cultural Japanese-American kids.

The mobiles we have are slightly more advanced (in Hong Kong anyway) compared to America and the UK. Hence there shouldn’t be a problem with screen size.

Secondly, WAP will render results differently. The font size shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

Furthermore, the networks over there normally offer a comprehensive WAP package with their tariffs, and so the audience already knows how to operate WAP to a good degree.

I certainly wouldn’t mind a Google search on my phone, but I live in Hong Kong, so I’m not sure if that includes me.

Thanks for these comments Ken. Japan’s mobile are also much more advanced than in the US.

I wonder though, what will you search for on a phone?

I mean what kind of info do you need to get through a Google search on a cell phone?

    The idea escapes me.

Honestly, cell phone companies should focus on fixing annoying cell phone reception problems rather than focusing in on gimmicky features such as “google on my cell phone.” i mean whats next? are cell phone companies going to team up with maytag and figure out some way for your cell phone to clean your dirty laundry too??

  • panasianbiz says:

    Micah,
Thanks for the information. It has been a while since I went to Japan.

You are right, I am old. Maybe the cell phone maker should consider that if they want ‘old people’ to buy their phones, too.

  • panasianbiz says:

I wish my cell phone would do my laundry.

People are going to drive and talk and drive and search and drive and…..

  • Dori says:

I hear you! My eyes are shrinking with my age, I cannot see the number I am dialing on my mobile, why do I need to search my mobile for answer while I have a big screen in front of me?

Don’t we have enough accident because of these mobile phones?

I think they run off idea, so this is the only way for them to make money and stay in business!

  • panasianbiz says:

In Asia, not as much time is spent in the car as in the West. A lot of time is spent on public transportation …looking at their cell phones perhaps.

    Thanks for your comments.

  • panasianbiz says:

Thanks for sharing this insight, Adrian.

I guess you have to be there and try to know, eh?
