Daddy and mommy, too, aren’t going to be happy.

More and more people are coming to Silicon Valley instead of going to New York City.

NYC is cool. I have been there. Central Park. Princess carriage rides. Mary Poppins Broadway show.

But Silicon Valley is home. And now, more people are wanting to live here.

The percentage of Harvard Business School grads wanting to work in the tech industry, make something, start something is up 50%.

The percentage of grads wanting to count beans or make money off other’s money is down 30%. MIT Sloan School of Management money handlers is down almost 40%.

And Yale and Cornell school MBAs are now twice as interested in working in technology as they used to be.

There are more Stanford MBA students opting to stay around (32%) and find a tech job than work with someone else’s money – 25%.  Just 2 years ago, only 13% stayed around and 36% went off to Madhatter land. (Ed. Manhattan).

It’s not about the money.

Top students heading to finance start at $150,000 with $135,000 in bonuses. Top students in technology start at $120,000 and $38,000 in bonuses … on average.

Students are asking 2 questions:

1. Where can I have influence on innovation?

2. Where can I make an impact?

Barclays is fighting back with a casual Friday dress code. Now, that’s funny.

I think Silicon Valley will probably counter with a Friday no flip-flop or shorts day.
