Bill Belew has raised 2 bi-cultural kids, now 34 and 30. And he and his wife are now parenting a 3rd, Mia, who is 8.

The people at 24 Hour Fitness are in need of some Amazing Grace. Or maybe daddy is going through reverse culture shock yet again.

For some reason, the managers at the Sunnyvale gym think that everyone in 24 Hour Fitness is 20-something and not worried about losing their hearing. Or they have already lost their hearing and need some help in the form of turning the volume knob more and more clockwise?

Daddy says the pretenses of music are so loud he cannot hear himself sweat. Maybe he can’t hear that anyway.

“Yo, dude. The music is really loud!”

“Yeah,” with a smile.

“Yo, dude. Can you turn the music down a little?”

“Yeah,’ with a bigger smile.

“Yo, dude. Look around. The majority of the people here now are at least 2x’s maybe even 3x’s the average age of the people who wrote the music you have playing. Can we change the station?”

“Yeah,” more smiles.

“Dude!”

“Oh, were you talking to me? I couldn’t hear what you were saying, the music is too loud.”

My daddy is convinced the music is louder than it use to be.

He says he’d be more convinced if he could just hear himself think.

Talk to Bill and others about their experiences raising bi-cultural Japanese-American kids.
