Mr. Yang Yuanqing, CEO, Lenovo

I recently heard Mr. Yang Yuanqing, CEO, of Lenovo, speak as part of a panel discussion.

Two days before this panel discussion, Mr. Yuanqing had dinner with Bill Gates and President Hu.

A multi-billion dollar deal may have been on his mind along with the deal to use Microsoft software legally. He didn’t look to me like he had just agreed to spend $16 billion and stop his company from stealing.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Yuanqing mentioned that President Hu had wished for a visit to Starbucks while in the Seattle area. Perhaps, Mr. Yuanqing wanted to say that President Hu is eager to taste the success that America has to offer.

In response to allegations that a Lenovo deal with the US state department was/might be an attempt at espionage, Mr. Yuanqing responded, “It is completely untrue. Our marketing is 100% transparent and we are socially responsible.”

Uh, at least he said the right thing.

Do I think China still spies on the US? Yes, I do.

Does America spy on China? Yes, I think it does.

Does/will Lenovo spy on the US? Only if they can get away with it.

What do you think?

Talk to Bill and others about their experiences raising bi-cultural Japanese-American kids.
