Bill Belew has raised 2 bi-cultural kids, now 34 and 30. And he and his wife are now parenting a 3rd, Mia, who is 8.

I  have written before at How to scratch an itch that mommies and daddies don’t need to worry about teaching us kids everything. Some things we can learn on our own.

It’s funny, cuz moms and dads want us to learn how to think for ourselves but they don’t like it when our thinking doesn’t agree with theirs.

What’s up with that?

Rapunzel and Me

My daddy doesn’t mind so much when I don’t agree with him. Or so he says.

Anyway. The first real date I ever had with my daddy was to go see the movie – Tangled. Way fun!

Totally cool when the flag appeared, then the castle, then the fireworks. I was hooked!

The people on the big screen were bigger than me! It was like I was alive inside the movie. And not scared at all! (My daddy was there, too!)

There was Flynn Rider and Maximus and the Hook Guy and and and… and Popcorn!

Now, my mommy raids my hair. (Ed: braids my hair). She and my daddy will even put flowers in there sometimes! And I feel so pretty! Maybe cuz I am. Or at least I think I am. My daddy ALWAYS says I am.

When the flowers are there I feel just like I am Rapunzel. And my daddy, well, he, um, looks like the big fat hook guy. But don’t tell him I said that.

Which brings me to the point here. Something else that pairs of ants (Ed: parents) don’t need to teach us kids…they don’t need to teach us how to pretend. We can do that just fine, thank you.

Daddy says it’s cuz God gave us little people magic nations (Ed: imaginations). And they are good things to have cuz we can go places and do things and have fun and never be scared…cuz, as I like to say…my daddy is there.

Talk to Bill and others about their experiences raising bi-cultural Japanese-American kids.
