Who has more Nobel Prize winners – Stanford or UC Berkeley?

This is an interesting question that lots of students and parents ask when they are trying to decide on where to go to university here in Silicon Valley where I live.

Moms and dads and students might use this answer as one of the criteria for determining the quality of a university’s program.

Who has more Nobel Prize winners

Who has more Nobel Prize winners

More Nobel prizes = better school. At least in this one area.

Can you answer: Which of these 11 inventions happened in Silicon Valley?

Trying to decide which university gets credit for training the individual who wins the Nobel prize is a bit tricky. Because some winners have gone to different schools for undergraduate, graduate, doctoral studies and post-doc studies. Or may be working at a university they didn’t attend at all when they won.

Anyway…

Back to the question –

Who has more Nobel Prize winners – Stanford or UC Berkeley?

The winner is Berkeley. Berkeley has 51 winners and 68 affiliations.

Stanford has 27 with 54 affiliations.

The UC school system has 104 winners and 121 affiliations. Wow!

Here’s the list.

UC San Diego has 20.

UCLA has 13.

UC Santa Barbara has 9.

UC San Francisco has 6.

UC Irvine has 4.

UC Riverside has 1.

Indeed the UC school system is much bigger than Stanford all by itself. But, it’s clear that the UC school system is a good choice all around.

And if you are living or coming to Silicon Valley, Berkeley might be the best first choice … if you want to be a Nobel Prize winner.
