China plans to have a magnetically levitated (maglev) train that can zip along at 500kph by 2010.

China issues 5-year plans. America wouldn’t do that…every politician is afraid they might not be around in five years.

From 2006-2011 (11th 5-year plan) China’s National scientific and technological support projects are focusing on 11 sectors:

1. energy

2. resources

3. environment

4. agriculture

5. materials

6. manufacturing

7. transport

8. IT and modern service industry

9. population

10 public health

11.urban development.

Number 7 – a 30-kilometer test line will be built by 2010 to test the 500kph train. What is that..about 30 kilometers in 17 minutes…not counting time to get up to speed and then slow back down.

There is already a maglev train using German technology linking Shanghai’s Pudong airport to the city.

China has also just put 15 bullet trains into operation…just in time…for the Lunar New Year.

These trains have a max speed of 200 kph.

With plans like the maglev train in the works, China’s economy is not the only aspect of the country that can be considered to be speeding along.

What do you think?

Talk to Bill and others about their experiences raising bi-cultural Japanese-American kids.
