Bill Belew has raised 2 bi-cultural kids, now 34 and 30. And he and his wife are now parenting a 3rd, Mia, who is 8.
Dr. Kai-fu Lee is the Vice President, Engineering and President of Google China.
In a recent panel discussion at the Committee of 100 tried to dispel a myth about Chinese students.
Simply…Chinese students and Chinese Universities are NOT universally amazing. Perhaps only the top 1% truly qualify. But since 1% of China is a lot it looks like a lot of students is amazing and it looks like the universities they come from are amazing.
But, Dr. Lee says, that is NOT true. And because 99% of Chinese universities do NOT get the funding that the top tier schools get, Chinese place an inordinate amount of weight on a school’s ranking. When they apply for schools here in the states…they look for the same…a top tier school.
Tell you what….I learned something. My wife was adamant in getting into the top school she could qualify for when she came to the states. I could NOT understand this. But, now I do. Thanks, Dr. Lee.
But for the rest of you…a little sympathy for the other 99% of the Chinese students would go a long way.
I learned something.
How about you?
