China

China is almost finished with the Three Gorges Dam, it’s biggest construction project since the Great Wall. The Dam, btw, is visible from every satellite in space.

The dam is a mile and half long, creates a reservoir 370 miles up the Yangtze River, delivers the equivalent of 18 nuclear power plants worth of power and…and…is huge!

It’s also a great terrorist target according to some….in particular the US Pentagon. Leave it to America to ask that question.

Taiwan, the Pentagon says, might just do that if attacked. War scenarios…how fun!

Cao Guangjing, the Vice General Manager of the construction company building the dam says that within 2-3 days the whole reservoir could be drawn down which could prevent a deluge caused by a busted dam. They could get all the people the dam displaced to lend fingers, too, to plug holes, no?

The dam can withstand more than a Richter scale 6 magnitude earthquake.

The Chinese government and dam builders are pretty full of themselves and feeling pretty confident.

The last time I remember someone being so confident about something so big….well…it sounds like it would make a great movie. Let’s hope we don’t have to find out in real life.

What do you think?

Talk to Bill and others about their experiences raising bi-cultural Japanese-American kids.
