Learning from Asian

GM is still cleaning house – they plan to cut 30,000 jobs and close all or part of 12 factories w/in the next 2 years.

But now they need someone to run this new company for them.

They have turned to their top dog in Asia, Troy Clarke.

Clarke has been battling out with the best in Asia, so, perhaps GM figures he knows something. Time will tell, eh?

Clarke has been with GM since he was 18 years old – he’s a very very young 51 years old now – same as me. I wonder why I wasn’t asked to head up this giant company…hmm…

Clarke’s biggest and most immediate task will be to “craft a strategy to get a radically new labor agreement for 2007.”

He served as GM’s chief negotiator in 2003 for two months when GM was duking it out with UAW union. (BTW, I hate unions.)

If I didn’t know any better, I would say the best idea is to come up with good quality cars that people want to buy all over the world so the GM can fill up its piggy banks and distribute the wealth equitably.

That would be a good strategy and something I am sure Clarke learned in Asia.

What do you think?

Talk to Bill and others about their experiences raising bi-cultural Japanese-American kids.
