Major League Baseball is eating its heart out.

The NBA already has 1.3 million Chinese fans cheering for Yao Ming. Now the MLB is hoping to find as many fans for Can-Hit Tu.

MLB officials said they are planning on opening an office in China to explore the possibilities of sending an All-Star Tour to China and to promote America’s favorite past-time. Well, it was a favorite until some 10 strikes ago.

Beijing’s 2008 Games will host softball and baseball. London’s 2012 Games will not.

Baseball  is hugely popular in Taiwan, Japan and South Korea. Why couldn’t a fourth Asian country come to the park and play also.

China will need more ball parks, sponsors, government support, club support, MLB Player’s Association support (good luck on this one), television interest and, of course, fans to pay ungodly sums to undeserving people.

Still, there is a huge potential for almost everything in China. Why not baseball?

What do you think?

Talk to Bill and others about their experiences raising bi-cultural Japanese-American kids.

Ironically, China makes 90% of the baseballs played by the rest of the world. Not only MLB need to go to China, they need to promote a chinese ball player who plays very well in the major league.
I am a chinese immigrant and my son plays baseball very well at age of 8. I hope they will promote my son as Yao Ming of baseball.

I recall that there was a four-team “pro” league that received coaching and sponsorship from MLB and was playing in the summer of 2004. Tianjin, Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou all had teams made up of Chinese players with two or three ringers from the US or Latin America and, if memory serves, some of the teams had coaches from Taiwan.

    Is the league still around?
